Trial Monitoring Supervisor - Sweden

About the Consultancy:
Syria Justice and Accountability Center (SJAC)’s comprehensive trial monitoring program establishes a historical record of Syria-related trials and ensures the availability of documentation for victims and families. Many domestic trials of perpetrators in the Syrian context lack official court transcripts and/or translations, rendering proceedings opaque, limiting the scope of testimony available, and hindering future opportunities for reflection on human rights violations and justice processes. SJAC’s launched its trial monitoring program in 2020 with the trial of Anwar R. and Eyad Al-Gharib in Koblenz, Germany, and has continued to monitor key Universal Jurisdiction cases to establish a historical record of international crimes.
The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC) seeks a temporary trial monitoring supervisor based in or near Stockholm, Sweden to support its ongoing monitoring of the Mahmoud S. trial. The supervisor will coordinate the team of trial monitors to ensure all court sessions are monitored, address any issues that arise over the course of proceedings, and review English-language trial monitoring reports. The position will be an estimated 40 hours a month. The position is paid at a rate of $25 per hour.
General Duties:
- Supervise team of trial monitors (approx. 8 members) attending the Universal Jurisdiction trial against Mahmoud S. before the Solna District Court, Sweden (hearings takes place in Stockholm), on international crimes committed in the siege of Yarmouk, Damascus.
- Coordinate attendance to ensure each hearing is covered by a trial monitor.
- Advise students on legal issues that arise in the course of proceedings.
- Liaise with Legal Director and Trial Monitoring Team Lead as needed on the trial.
- Review English-language trial reports produced by trial monitors within reasonable time of the hearings to ensure that reporting adheres to SJAC’s style and quality standards
- Liaise with external partners and parties to the trials, as available, to inform court reporting.
Qualifications:
- University degree required. A degree in law, human rights or a similar field is preferred.
- Knowledge of Syria and the Syrian conflict and of Swedish criminal procedure.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Experience or interest in monitoring trials.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Fluency in Swedish and English. Arabic (including knowledge of Syrian Arabic dialects) is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Live in or near Stockholm, Sweden.
- Ability to function professionally and effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
