NPR’s Morning Edition examines President Bashar Al-Assad’s standing in Syria as the country holds a presidential election on Tuesday.

Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC) Executive Director Mohammad Al Abdallah notes that President Assad renewed his political hold on Syria by targeting opposition activists. “Targeting those people by killing them, arresting them or forcing them to leave the country, that will automatically send – like removing the first row of activists who’s most qualified to do this leadership and planning a strategic vision for the uprising,” says Al Abdallah.
