Legal Fellow

LOCATION: Washington, D.C. or Remote

Position Summary

SJAC is seeking a law student, or recent law graduate, for a paid legal fellowship for the 2025-2026 academic year. The Legal Fellow will provide legal research and writing assistance to the Legal Director and assist with SJAC’s activities in documentation, data analysis and transitional justice discourse. The Legal Fellow will work 10-15 hours per week for a six-month fellowship, beginning August 2025 and be paid at the rate of $25.00/hour. Legal Fellows based in the Washington, DC area will have the opportunity to work from SJAC’s offices. General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research and write legal memoranda concerning inter alia atrocity crimes, economic sanctions, and/or reparations frameworks as well as asylum standards in multiple jurisdictions
  • Assist in updating SJAC’s database of universal jurisdiction cases relevant to the Syrian conflict, by conducting research in various states
  • Support the research and writing of SJAC’s human rights and transitional justice reports and short-form analysis

Skills and Experience

  • Current law student in, or recent graduate of, a J.D. or L.L.M. program
  • Coursework in international law, human rights law, international criminal law, asylum law and/or evidence preferred
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of Arabic an asset
