ISIS Data Analyst

Location: Worldwide (Remote)

Duration: 3 months (with possible extensions)

Hours: Up to 152 hours/month

The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC) is a Syrian human rights organization that pursues meaningful justice and accountability for crimes committed in Syria. SJAC’s Missing Persons Program focuses on discovering the fates and whereabouts of Syrians who have gone missing in the country since 2011.

About the Consultancy:

SJAC is seeking a consultant to process and interpret data pertaining to the activities of alleged ISIS affiliates, and generate leads to guide subsequent investigations into the fate of missing persons in Syria. The ISIS Data Analyst will review, reorganize, and analyze this data, which is currently stored in large CSV files that require significant re-formatting. The Analyst will collaborate with other colleagues in SJAC’s Missing Persons Program to facilitate the storage of this data on SJAC’s database and identify areas of focus for subsequent investigations. The Analyst will be asked to draft research memos on important findings in the course of analysis.

The consultant will be eligible to work up to 152 hours per month on a flexible schedule, with the exception of weekly meetings at fixed times. Consultancy agreements will be made through December 2025, with the option to continue pending performance and available funding.

General Duties

  • Review and reformat CSV files for subsequent storage on SJAC database;
  • Catalogue CSV files to support wider SJAC Missing Persons Program documentation analysis efforts, and potentially perform similar work on multimedia and textual data;
  • Interpret ISIS data by identifying relevant patterns to guide subsequent SJAC missing persons investigations into the fate of ISIS missing;
  • Track thematic findings of analysis and produce research memos for circulation among SJAC colleagues;
  • Contribute to ad-hoc research and analysis tasks related to SJAC’s missing persons investigations into particular incidents, entities, and cases of related to disappearance;
  • Participate in regular team calls, and collaborate using online teamwork tools;
  • Collaborate with other SJAC Data Analysts to address issues and report on Bayanat bugs;

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Arabic (spoken and written) and English (especially written) are musts;
  • Expert knowledge of ISIS operations in Syria and Iraq are required; familiarity with wider context of Syrian conflict preferred
  • Familiarity with practices of Syrian and Iraqi intelligence apparatuses
  • Previous data entry and research experience; proficiency in data engineering a plus
  • Basic proficiency with database software and online user interfaces;
  • Willingness to review and analyze graphic content;
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to accuracy and detail;
  • Ability to handle confidential information;
  • Ability to function professionally and effectively with co-workers and supervisors
