Human Rights Analyst (Consultant)

LOCATION: Global (Remote)

SJAC is seeking a consultant to analyse its collection of interviews with witnesses and survivors of violations committed in Syria and assist SJAC in formalizing and improving existing interview analysis methodologies.

The interview analyst may work hours on their own schedule; however they should be available for pre-scheduled meetings on a weekly basis.  Analysts should expect to work between 140 and 160 hours per month.

Initial agreements will be offered through August 2026, with possible options to extend based on performance and available funding.  

General Duties

  • Review written, Arabic language interviews in SJAC’s database, extract key information, and apply appropriate labels.
  • Conduct searches in the database for related evidence and ensure that each interview is connected to related information within the database. 
  • Attend weekly documentation team meetings and provide feedback on interviews as needed.
  • Work with SJAC’s research team to highlight themes that may be appropriate for further documentation or publications.
  • Collaborate with SJAC’s research and analysis teams to improve methodologies for qualitative analysis of interviews.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Arabic (spoken Syrian Arabic and written) and English;
  • Knowledge of Syria and the Syrian conflict required, particularly regarding human rights violations such as arbitrary detention and torture;
  • Knowledge of the gender dynamics of the conflict and how violations have affected different communities preferred;
  • Experience in qualitative research and analysis and human rights documentation preferred;
  • Ability to provide impartial analysis of interviews covering violations committed by all parties to the Syrian conflict, as well as the current government and other actors;
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential data professionally and follow digital security protocols;
  • Familiarity with data management systems and remote collaboration tools;
  • Attention to detail and the ability to consistently apply SJAC’s methodology across all interviews;
  • Willingness to review and discuss graphic content.
