English/Arabic Translator (Consultant)

Location: Remote

About the Consultancy:

SJAC is seeking a translator to provide English to Arabic translations. The consultant will be responsible for translating SJAC’s written materials, including short articles, longer reports, and other documents as needed. While the consultant can set their own schedule, SJAC is seeking someone who can guarantee rapid translation and commit to approximately 5,000 – 10,000 words translated per month.

Applicants should have the ability to provide idiomatically correct and natural sounding translations, rather than translating word for word. A translation exercise will be provided for applicants who make it to the second round of consideration.

General Duties:

  • Translate SJAC’s articles and reports
  • Occasionally translating short documents from Arabic into English
  • Coordinate with SJAC staff to ensure correct translation of difficult or sensitive terminology

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years’ experience in professional English-Arabic translation.
  • Experience translating English to Arabic and vice versa.
  • Translation speed of 2000 – 3500 words per day.
  • Familiarity in translating technical content, especially related to the Syrian conflict, human rights, and/or international law.
  • Full professional fluency in Arabic with exceptional grammar.
  • Professional working proficiency in English.
  • Knowledge of the Syrian conflict is preferred.

SJAC is a diverse organization made up of 40+ team members around the globe. We pride ourselves in our ability to implement programming that is inclusive and responsive to the needs of all Syrians, and believe that our own team’s diversity of viewpoints and experiences helps us to achieve that goal. We encourage all interested applicants to apply, regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or age.

To apply, please send an email with the subject line “Arabic Translator” to [email protected], providing a cover letter, CV, and proposed rate. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting 7/19/2024.
